Your Eye Examination - What to expect

A full comprehensive visual examination will begin with a complete history of your medical and ocular health including a list of all medications you currently take. Each examination is customized to the needs of that patient and generally will take approximately an hour of office time. Eye drops are used to dilate pupils to assist in ocular health examination and imaging. These drops will likely cause some blur and light sensitivity for several hours afterwards. Prepare for this by bringing sunglasses and possibly the assistance of a driver. Our examination will include a full medical and ocular case history, visual acuity testing, binocular vision assessment, colour vision testing where indicated, refraction (determining spectacle correction), intraocular pressures for glaucoma assessment, internal and external ocular health assessment, retinal imaging and visual field evaluation as indicated.

Medical And Ocular Case History

Detailed personal and family history of eye conditions and medical conditions. List of medications presently taking or others no longer taking that could relate to eye condition. All current symptoms and concerns.

Visual Acuity

Ability to see will be measured at distance and near with and/or without glasses at both distance and near.

Colour vision testing

Ability to see will be measured at distance and near with and/or without glasses at both distance and near.

Subjective Refraction

Best spectacle correction for distance and near will be determined for both glasses and contact lenses.

Binocular Vision Assessment

Eye muscle evaluation will be done to determine any misalignment and how well the two eyes work together at both distance and near. Stereo acuity measurement to determine depth perception for children and as required for adults.
Correction for misalignment or discomfort with binocularity with eye muscle exercise, prism or custom made lenses (Shaw Lenses) will be determined.

Pupil Reflexes

Constriction and dilation of the pupil will be assessed for abnormality which could relate to optic nerve or ocular motor damage or any abnormality along the visual pathway to the brain.

Biomicroscopy

The slit lamp examination allows evaluation of the cornea, crystalline lens, eyelids and conjunctiva to look for presence of cataracts and any disease or disorder of the eyelids, cornea and conjunctiva as well as any inflammation of the front of the eye. Dry eye assessment is done by assessing the tear film and lid margin health as well as the tear glands and tear ducts.

Retinal Examination

Internal ocular health assessment is aided by the use of eye drops to dilate the eyes to allow the doctor to see more completely the back of the eye (the retina). This ensures that any retinal disease or condition such as holes, tears or detachments are found if present. The optic nerve and macula (central retina) are carefully examined For an additional fee retinal and optic nerve photography and imaging (OCT) will be preformed and is strongly recommended.

Hi-tech imaging

OCT - Ocular Coherence Tomography is retinal imaging we strongly recommend to microscopically examine and measure the thickness of the layers of the central retina to assess for retinal disease or degenerations such as macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. Optic nerve imaging (OCT) is strongly recommended to determine early signs of glaucoma and other diseases of the optic nerve. This imaging allows for measurement of the nerve fibre layer which is helpful in monitoring for progression or stability of glaucoma and success of treatment.

Measuring the extent of the peripheral fields of each eye and the sensitivity of vision in each field is a useful tool for assessing ocular and neural heath in a number of cases such as; glaucoma or family history of glaucoma, head trauma or brain injury or disease, increasing headaches or headaches that have become more severe, or any suspicion arising from the eye examination because of neural or retinal health.

Your eye doctor will go over all examination results and thoroughly explain a treatment plan. A prescription for eye glasses will be provided if necessary. A referral to the appropriate health care practitioner will be arranged if necessary. Follow up examinations will be discussed

Contact Lens evaluation

Evaluation of current contact lenses for fit and vision will be done. Ocular health concerns with the current contact lenses will be evaluated and discussed. Improvements to the current lenses will be discusses relating to the parameters for vision and fit, material of the contacts, wearing schedule, and cleaning regime.

New contact lens wearers will require contact lens fitting appointments including fitting appointment with the eye doctor to determine the best lenses for fit and vision and then time spent with the Optician to teach proper lens insertion and removal and lens care. Follow up appointments with the eye doctor will be at one week and again a few weeks later to ensure comfortable lens wear and good vision and no ocular health concerns. Subsequent appointments will be arranged as needed for each patient.

Patients who have previously worn contact lenses and need a new type of contact lens will require a contact lens refitting appointment. This usually involves an initial appointment to determine what changes to the current contact lens are needed. These lenses will be provided as trial lenses. A follow up appointment will be made to ensure that the new lenses are successful.
